Cognition and Learning

Within this area of need children may:

  • Learn at a different pace to their peers
  • Find the curriculum a challenge at times
  • Struggle with organisation and memory
  • Have a specific difficulty in a particular curriculum area

Support for learning difficulties may be required when children learn at a different pace to their peers, even when teachers plan and deliver work that is specific to an individual’s needs. Learning difficulties cover a wide ranging area of needs including moderate learning difficulties (MLD), severe learning difficulties (SLD) where children are likely to need support in all areas of the curriculum and associated difficulties with mobility and or communication, through to profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD) where children are likely to have severe and complex learning difficulties as well as a physical disability and or sensory impairment.

Specific learning difficulties affect more than one or more specific aspects of learning. This encompasses a range of conditions such as dyslexia, dyscalculia and dyspraxia. We work with a range of multi agencies to identify and support children’s individual learning needs. This is outlined in more detail on our school information report.
