Communication and Interaction

Within this area of need children may:

  • Struggle to talk or say what they want / need
  • Find it difficult to understand what other people are saying
  • Find conversations and play challenging / confusing

Children with speech and language difficulties are supported in the classroom by additional adult support, evidence based provisions and guidance from the SENCo or where relevant a speech and language therapist (SaLT)

Welford has a link therapist as part of the Balanced System, they have a caseload of children that they work with / assess / observe / make recommendations to school. In addition to this the link therapist advises the SENCo in relation to the development of whole school strategies / provides additional guidance to specific staff / year groups / whole school as part of SEND professional development.

As a school we utilise Speech and Language Link children are assessed at the start of the academic year to identify specific needs in relation to speech and language needs. If a child is identified as requiring interventions they then follow a small group programme of support, and their progress is monitored carefully throughout. Should additional support be required above this the SENCO will liaise with parents and where appropriate the child will be placed on the waiting list for a SaLT review as part of the balanced system.

Children who have been diagnosed with autism (ASD) or with social and communication difficulties are supported in line with their individual needs.

All support is overseen by the SENCo and provision is in place is monitored carefully each term as part of the schools provision management strategies to ensure each individual child makes progress from the starting points. For children with an EHC provision outlined in section F of their plan is reviewed carefully by the SENCo to ensure that school is fulfilling the expectations and reasonable adjustments are made as appropriate to their individual needs
